What is the sound that creates the most excitement in you?
For me, it is the sound of an orchestra tuning their instruments right before the performance starts. The electricity in the air is tangible and you catch yourself holding your breath because you are afraid you might miss a note if you breathe.
This morning I was woken by the birds tuning their instruments, and, for a moment, I held my breath. I love mornings like this; fresh, crisp air, time to slowly potter and to appreciate the beautiful moments that seem to happen when you blink.
It was a load-shedding morning (no power because our electricity provider is government-owned, has the monopoly and has been helping themselves to the money we pay instead of maintaining the power plants). So, my coffee water was boiled on the gas stove in the enamel kettle that was my family’s camping kettle when I was little. I love the memories attached to it and how the sprout makes a perfect steam cloud.
I heard a sound and looked over to see Bubbles perfectly framed by the door, sitting all pretty on the rug that my friend threw out. I have a sneaky suspicion that it may be a real Persian carpet, but I do not want to know, because then I would feel different about it.
Bubbles is my Velcro cat; he follows me around, sits on my keyboard when I work, talks, and demands tummy rubs and chin scratches. He loves to be brushed and has the ability to stay white even though we live in the bush. While I waited for the kettle to boil, I went over to him and sat down on the mat. He immediately came over for a cuddle and tummy rub session. The kettle’s spout-cloud broke the moment.
I made coffee and carried it out, taking the long route to the patio. I love walking through the coral tree blossom carpet this time of the year. I also love how the tree branches reflect in the cup of coffee.
It was just a normal morning; no high day or holiday weekend or breakaway, but the difference was that I took time to listen, to see, to feel and to appreciate.
I hope you have a chance today to see and experience moments that makes you feel like you are part of a Monet painting.
